The apostolic record consistently treats repentance, water baptism, and Spirit reception as the commanded response to the gospel rather than optional religious accessories. Grace is God’s saving source, Christ’s death and resurrection are the saving event, and living faith is the means of reception. Biblical obedience responds to grace; it does not purchase it.
The singular name of Matthew 28:19 is enacted throughout Acts by baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, the revealed saving name. The gospel pattern is Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. Acts 2:38 gives the covenant response: repentance, burial with Christ in baptism, and new life by the Spirit.
Baptism does not earn grace. It is a faith-response in which the believer obeys Christ, identifies with His death and burial, and calls on His name. The Bible’s rejection of meritorious works does not turn commanded faith-response into unbelieving human merit. Scripture can oppose works of law while demanding obedience of faith.
Connect water baptism to Christ’s death and burial, then move to resurrection life rather than treating baptism as an isolated ceremony.
