Trace Sonship through prophecy, conception, birth, growth, mission, death, and exaltation.
The Son of God is the holy child born through the incarnation, not a second divine being eternally begotten beside God.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
The prophecy locates Sonship in the born child while identifying the child with divine titles.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
The promised child is named Jesus because He will perform the LORD’s saving work.
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
The angel’s ‘therefore’ connects Son of God to conception by the Holy Ghost and birth of the holy child.
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
The Son enters history at the fullness of time, made of a woman and placed under the law.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
Jesus increases in wisdom and stature, confirming a real human life rather than a divine costume.
3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; 4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Paul holds together the Son’s human descent from David and His powerful declaration in resurrection.
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
The children share flesh and blood, so the Son truly participates in the same humanity to die and defeat death.
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
The one mediator is the man Christ Jesus, the genuine human representative before the one God.
