Answer the false choice between salvation by grace and an obedient response of faith.
Salvation is God’s gift by grace, received through living faith that obeys Christ; obedience is response, not the price or source of grace.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
Salvation is God’s gift, not human boasting, and it recreates believers for good works.
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Every sinner depends on free justification by God’s grace through Christ’s redemption.
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Paul’s grace and apostleship aim at obedient faith among all nations.
For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Biblical faith is active through love rather than a lifeless intellectual claim.
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Faith with no corresponding action is dead.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
James explicitly rejects justification by a faith that remains alone and unexpressed.
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Christ is the source of eternal salvation, and the text identifies the recipients as those who obey Him.
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
Baptism is not confidence in human work; it is faith in God’s operation that raises the believer with Christ.
5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Paul denies self-righteous works while affirming God’s saving washing and renewal by the Holy Ghost.
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
The grace that saves also teaches believers to reject ungodliness and live holy lives.
