The Gospel Event: Death, Burial, Resurrection

The gospel is first the saving event God accomplished in Jesus Christ before it is the response believers make.

Lesson thesisChrist’s death for sins, burial, and bodily resurrection are the historical center and saving power of the apostolic message.
Plain-language pass

Start with the main point: The gospel is first the saving event God accomplished in Jesus Christ before it is the response believers make.

  • Name what the passage says before explaining what it means.
  • Use one clear Scripture before stacking several references.
  • Answer the checkpoint in plain words first.
01

The gospel is news before it is instruction

Paul reminds Corinth of the message they received: Christ died for sins according to Scripture, was buried, and rose on the third day. Salvation rests on what God has done, not human religious achievement.

The cross deals with sin, the burial confirms death, and the resurrection announces victory, vindication, and new creation.

02

The event carries covenant meaning

Jesus’ death is substitutionary and representative. He bears sins and opens reconciliation. His resurrection is not a private miracle but the beginning of the coming resurrection and the basis of new life.

The gospel cannot be reduced to moral improvement, inspiration, or a formula detached from Christ.

03

The event creates a response pattern

Apostolic preaching announces the event and calls hearers to respond. Repentance turns from the old life, baptism joins the believer to Christ’s burial, and Spirit-filled life participates in resurrection power.

The response does not repeat or improve Christ’s work. It is the God-commanded way faith enters and lives from that work.

Scripture lab

Mark event and response

Create two columns: what Christ accomplished and how hearers are called to respond.

Watch for
  • Christ bears sins, dies, is buried, and rises.
  • Believers do not save themselves.
  • The apostolic response mirrors death, burial, and new life.
Key terms
Gospel
The good news of Jesus Christ’s saving death, burial, and resurrection and the reign established through Him.
Substitution
Christ bears the judgment and burden of sin on behalf of sinners.
Common misunderstandingThe gospel is only a set of steps a person performs.

The gospel begins with Christ’s saving event. The steps are the response of faith to what He accomplished.

Reflection and teaching note
