Lesson 3 of 4Level 1: Plain Foundations54 minutes

The Holy Ghost as God’s Own Spirit

The Holy Ghost is the one God present, active, speaking, empowering, and dwelling in believers.

Lesson thesisSpirit-language describes God’s own personal presence and action, not a third divine being alongside the Father and Christ.
Plain-language pass

Start with the main point: The Holy Ghost is the one God present, active, speaking, empowering, and dwelling in believers.

  • Name what the passage says before explaining what it means.
  • Use one clear Scripture before stacking several references.
  • Answer the checkpoint in plain words first.
01

God is Spirit and gives His Spirit

The Spirit is not an impersonal force. The Spirit speaks, teaches, leads, searches, empowers, and can be grieved. These are the personal actions of God present with His people.

Personal action does not require another person beside God. God Himself is personal and acts through His Spirit.

02

The Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ converge

Romans can move between Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ, and Christ in you because the indwelling presence is not divided among competing Spirits.

There is one Spirit. The risen Christ comes to His people through the promised Spirit without His glorified humanity becoming omnipresent flesh.

03

Jesus explains the Comforter

Jesus says the Father will give another Comforter, then says, ‘I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.’ The Spirit continues Jesus’ presence and teaching among believers.

Another distinguishes the mode of presence and ministry after Jesus’ bodily departure. It need not mean another divine being with an independent center of consciousness.

Key terms
Pneumatology
The study of the Holy Ghost, His identity, work, gifts, and indwelling presence.
Comforter
Paraklētos, one called alongside to help, teach, advocate, and continue Christ’s presence.
Common misunderstandingIf the Spirit speaks personally, He must be a separate divine person.

God’s own Spirit acts personally because God is personal. Scripture also calls the indwelling presence the Spirit of Christ and confesses one Spirit.

How do John 14:18 and Romans 8:9 help interpret ‘another Comforter’?
